City of Melbourne

City of Melbourne created an opportunity for local artists to contribute works for a city-wide Creative Hoardings trial. This was to create an opportunity for developers to transform construction sites into vibrant creative spaces, adding colour and storytelling to Melbourne’s streets. The artists were encouraged to find the 'soul' of Melbourne, steering away from overused iconography, like Flinders Street station, trams and Federation Square. Using this brief, this was the illustrations and response created:

Coming out of 2 years of lockdowns and hardship, it has become increasingly clear that Naarm/Melbourne is so much more than what we thought it was. When all is stripped away, at its core, Naarm/Melbourne is its people. When there is pain or injustice, need or despair, Naarm/Melbourne rises up to bring hope and love to those who need it.

Naarm/Melbourne is more than good food and world class coffee.
It is more than sports games and celebrities.
It is more than beautiful architecture and luscious landscapes.
It is more than buildings and alleyways.
Naarm/Melbourne is its people.
And we are resilient.
We are hope-filled.
We are welcoming.
We are diverse.
We place love as the highest value.
We are proud.
We are Naarm/Melbourne.
